Busy busy busy... kids on holidays puts things like blogging and sewing on the back burner. While I've been busy with kids, loads of you have been busy sewing - and lots of you have been sewing The Night Garden!
When it's at home, The Night Garden lives above my bed in my bedroom. It's Damian's favourite and his choice to have it there.
Wether you make the block from the template set I am selling or from the templates in the book, this is a great, fun little block to sew up. You can order the templates, as well as the tweezer scissors, applique glue and applique needles I like to use, from me at sarah@sarahfielke.com. My new online shop is coming soon so stay tuned!
A few of you have been having trouble getting the block to come out the same size every time, so I thought I would give you a tutorial and show you how to sew and press the seams to get the right size every time. I will stress you need either my new book, Quilting: from little things, or the template set to make these blocks. The pattern for the whole quilt is only in the book.
First, use your template set or the book templates to cut one of each shape required for the block.
First, sew a background kite shape to the kite shape for the top of the tulip. Press the seam UNDER the tulip piece.
Trim the "ear" from the side.
Sew another background kite shape to the other side of the tulip top. Press the seam UNDER the tulip again. This will give you your 1/4" seam at the tip.
Place a leaf triangle right sides together onto the bottom "v" of the kite shape and sew along one edge of the v.
Press the seam TOWARDS the leaf.
Sew a leaf to the other side of the kite shapes by sewing along the "v" seam, pivoting the needle in the centre and then sewing down the middle to inset piece the other leaf.
Matching the points of the triangle at the bottom of the leaf, sew a background triangle to the side of the flower.
Press the seam UNDER the leaf.
Repeat with the other background triangle.
Press the seam under the leaf again and square up the blocks.
If you are making your own Night Gardens I would love to see! Make sure and send me a picture or add your photos to the Quilting: From Little Things Flickr group.
In the mean time, some others have been making some of my other quilts! Here's a beautiful version of The Seasons (Material Obsession Two) from Yvonne.
And Belinda has been making Spring (Quilting: from little things)
And Jenny at Elefantz has been making a few of the dolly quilts in Quilting: from little things. She has challenged herself to make one every month until she has made them all!
Have YOU been making one of my quilts? Make sure and let me know, I would love to see!

THANK YOU, Sarah! Since Night Garden is next on the list, I appreciate your tute! Hmm, mayhaps I should be making some of these blocks in between tasks on Big Red. :-)

Hi Sarah
Your template A is it the same size and shape as the one you have used for Jazz Hands? If yes would it be possible to buy only template A? When will I be able to buy it and what is the price for it and will it be to expencive to send it all the way to Denmark.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Pia, you can buy the template for Jazz Hands from me, it is $9 and the postage to Denmark will only be around $5 or $6, it's very tiny. Please email me at sarah@sarahfielke.com for an invoice

Hi Daisy, you haven't done anything wrong, the photo is printed wrongly. ::sigh:: errata page coming soon. The geese look just as nice flying the other direction though :)

Thank you so much for this tutorial - Jenny actually sent me a copy of your book, and Night Garden is one of my favorites! I'm going to be making the little quilts along with her, I hope to start soon!

Hi Sarah. Thanks for the inspiration and guidance for making tulips. I have made my first ones and posted them on my site. I'm fairly new to all this so am not on flickr. I am sure I will improve as time goes by. Love your work! Sally
